Saving money when storing your goods is all about maximising your use of space.

At CityStore we aim to provide you with the right size unit to fit your needs so you are not paying more than you require. Just remember to follow a few simple rules:

Ensure you use strong boxes and fill them full – this will mean you can stack them safely to the top of your unit without fear that they may collapse
Sofas / Settees – by storing them on their end you can save a significant amount of floor space.
Cupboards & Wardrobes – there is alot of empty space inside these pieces of furniture which you can use to store and protect smaller items.

We may not all be able to come up with the idea for the shoe wheel (see above) to save space, but we can all use a few tips now and then to save money.

Moving Boxes – using the right size

When moving house you have to be careful not to make boxes too heavy. Individual items like books are light on their own but if you put 30 in a box it can end up being too heavy to lift. So make sure you buy the right size box for the things you are looking to pack.

Use small storage boxes for books, DVD’s and smaller items ; use medium storage boxes for kitchen items and larger, lighter items; use large storage boxes for bed linen and clothes.

And if you are using self-storage to store your belongings, ensure that boxes are well-packed. Part-filled boxes can be weaker if you are stacking them and could potentially collapse if they are at the bottom. For more advice on packing and storing, get in touch with your local store.

Protect your furniture

It is always good practice to cover your mattresses and sofas whilst in transit and whilst in storage. Rental vans may look clean on the inside but pulling mattresses out of the back can sometimes leave marks. Use plastic covers available in most storage centres or DIY stores.

Keep fridges fresh

If you are storing a fridges or freezers, make sure you follow these 3 simple tips.

Use appliance rollers to help transport fridges and freezers into your unit. Appliance rollers are designed to fix to the bottom of any appliance and have wheels to make moving easy.
Always store your fridge in the upright position as it laying it on its side may cause damage due to the gas settling horizontally for a prolonged period of time.
Always keep the doors slightly ajar to allow air to circulate inside and prevent any bad odours.
