With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics now underway (albeit a year later than expected), we are all following the games with intent at CityStore – here are some facts we have picked up!
The Olympic Rings
The five Olympic rings are symbolic of the five continents. The colours were chosen because appear on the flags of the competing nations around the world.
The First Paralympics
The first Paralympic Games took place in Rome in 1960. This allowed war veterans a chance to compete and rehabilitate. Before then, physically disabled athletes competed in the Olympics. Olympic gymnast George Eyser famously won six medals with a wooden leg in the 1904 Games.
LONDON 2012 WAS A HISTORICAL MOMENT FOR EQUALITY
London 2012 proved a landmark moment for the Olympics. It was the first summer Olympics that showcased true equality. Women were not barred from a single sport and for the first time in history, each nation sent a female competitor.
Only five countries have been represented at every modern-era Summer Olympic Games
Greece, Great Britain, France, Switzerland and Australia.
Only three modern Olympic Games have been cancelled
The games were cancelled due to World War I (1916) and World War II (1940, 1944).
