Self storage: allows both individuals and businesses to rent storage units. In essence it’s your own tailored secure space away from your home or business. This is typically done within bespoke storage centres, with high security. Storage units are secured by the tenant’s own lock and key, so no one else can access your goods and centres are equipped with security cameras. Many self storage operators also have individual unit alarms and access control to safeguard clients’ items.
Most storage centres allow unlimited free access during their opening hours and 24-hour access is commonly an optional extra. Self storage often comes with flexible terms, so you are not tied in to any long-term agreements. The self storage provider should be able to offer insurance for your goods or direct you to a third party. Not every centre provides the same security or facilities, so a visit to your chosen storage centre is always highly recommended before you reserve your space.
For peace of mind it’s also recommended that you choose a provider who is a member of the UK Self Storage Association.
Containerised storage: these are generally large, unmanned shipping containers that are secured with big steel doors. The internal temperatures will vary, with the container open to the elements. Some providers store containers in a barn for added protection. Security is provided in the form of steel disc locks, which are difficult to cut open. The biggest benefit of containers is they tend to be drive-up units, which can be great for vehicle storage or industrial equipment. As with self storage, flexible terms and insurance options are commonly offered by the provider.
Removal companies: your moving company may offer to take your household or business possessions and store them for you between moves. Storage is typically in wooden crates sealed by the removal company, or in a communal storage area. Crates are often stacked in a warehouse by forklift, so they don’t always provide easy access. You should check what notice you need to exit the agreement, as this can differ depending on your chosen provider. Don’t forget to check that your goods are covered by an insurance policy.
Lock-up garage: these are low-cost and offer easy access to suit your timing. Security tends to be the biggest concern as it is based on the lock system available on the door. Unfortunately, garages can be prone to break-ins as well as damp and vermin. You should ensure you arrange an appropriate insurance policy to cover your goods.
Storage with friends and family: quite often people rely on friends and family for short or long-term storage – whether it’s a back bedroom, garage or shed. This is low-cost, but goodwill may be limited if you use the space longer than intended! If you choose this option, check the household contents insurance policy covers the extra goods.
